Time will tell on that one I guess. TBH, I'm an idealist - I still have hope Linux will rival the Desktop market at some point. Look how fast Mac OS X got up there, and it's, somewhat, related to Unix/BSD.

I honestly think most well built distro's like Ubuntu are already ready for the Desktop market (i've converted several family members who prefer it over their previous XP or Vista). I just think most people still have pre-conceived notions of Linux being only for geeks.. and other uneducated people spreading either misinformation or outright lies (I don't think the majority of it is malicious, simply uninformed regurgitation of the same lies they were told).

The biggest market Linux is failing to hit, IMHO, is the Gamers. This isn't really "linux"'s fault, as it's perfectly capable of gaming, but gamers don't do games for it. I personally just bought a rather nice Gaming Desktop with an ATI 4890 in it that I use to play Crysis, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and WoW... and I exclusively use Ubuntu in my house. Including the wife.

So anyway.. in summary: while microsoft retains it's holdings for now.. Open Source technology on all fronts continues to gain popularity and foothold into the market. An explosion to shift the balance could hit tomorrow.. or in 10 years.. no telling when. But until I see the numbers falling and dying out I'll hold onto the Open Source idea.
