For some reason, skype was not working for me either. Impossible to create a new account, and impossible to log in with an existing account. Trying to launch /usr/lib/skyhost/skyhost from the command line would give a segmentation fault error.

I ended up re-flashing the N900 firmware and it now is working fine.

I still have no idea what caused skype not to work initially...
