Not that this answers your question but you can get the pipe | character by also pressing the blue arrow key and then pressing ctrl key on the physical keyboard - this will bring up the symbols screen and the | character is the last one on the first row (far right)...

There also seems to be some mismatch between what is shown on the battery graphic and what the percentage reads when you do this - my battery looks like it is about 60% full yet the percentage shows at 45%...
