Apologies to all for replying to an off-topic post. But did you try (in an xterm):

cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

I don't have PR1.1 yet, but in the 2009.44 firmware this was set to '0', meaning "respond to pings".
If you see a value of '1' it means that ping responses have been intentionally disabled.
