You can ignore the "USB 2.0" warning; it's boilerplate and not relevant to the issue.
The problem for me seemed to be on the Windows XP side. The solution was rebooting the N900 (disconnected from cable), inserting the usb cable into the N900 first, then inserting into the PC-- and waiting. It took XP a while to find the USB driver and fully install the device; if I tried to access it too soon I received the error you get.
