Well, depending on your proficiency, you could be asking for trouble.

Anyway, if you are using Windows, install the ssh server on your device as per instructions elsewhere, and then install WinSCP on your PC. Use WinSCP to log in as root on the device and you will be able to browse (or screw up) your N900's rootfs as you wish. Using the default editor (IIRC, been a long time) is a good plan, as it gets the line endings right - a normal windows editor will probably screw them up.

On a Mac, TextWrangler (or BBEdit - it's paid-for variant) is the way forward, as it has native support for SFTP (provided by the SSH server).
