and you don't need to forward any ports when you're trying to access machines on the same network. that's only needed if you want to have SSH access to your local network from outside (aka from the WAN connection).
ahhhh I was using the IP address ( ie using whatsmyip.com) instead of the IP address on my router (prob not the most techincal of terminology Im using here!). v cool, thanks for the help

edit - v nice, you can edit the system files easily - v dangerous but good.
