I recognize that problem. It has happened to me when dumping backup data into an older version of MySQL (4.x) and then reading it with a PHP script. Something wrong with the way the character set is interpreted by PHP. I wonder if the MySQL version on the new servers is too old? Are they using Debian 3?!?

EDIT: The Brainstorm karma is ridiculously high.
