Two media players at the same time is completely sensible. Having two (or more) from the extras-devel repository is a bit like riding a bicycle carrying torches so you can light the barbeque and fireworks more quickly when you get there before the people chose to walk.

You know, that sounds like fun. :-)

There's a bit of the admiration of the reckless, I think. You're still early in learning the command line, but you're diving in and fighting with some fairly tricky and non-obvious issues with packaging and libraries anyway. It like the time your 16 year old brother decides to fix the leaking gas tank on his very old car after puncturing it in a field, and doesn't think about flushing the gasoline fumes out. "I'll idle the car until then engine stops--the feed comes from the bottom so it will get all the liquid." The initiative and energy is good, but some pain is likely to result.

Having to reflash *is* a possibility from the experiementing you are doing. Luckily, having to "flash" is the probably the most painful it's likely to get, so keep on pushing. :-) (Note that 100% of config and data doesn't survive a flash, and never will...)
