I would imagine the wifi chip is somewhat embedded-

I have used and abused my 770 nonstop for a year and a half,
and its aluminum case has it's share of dents (it once bounced off concrete).

I love the thing,
but it is not for everyone.

If you are looking for a polished, faultless product,
the N770 ain't it.

What I have noticed about the hardware is that initially, when brand new, it seems a bit shaky, but after a few initial reboots, some installed apps, and a swap space set is set up, it becomes quite solid.

Since you just purchased a 770, did you buy it new?
If so, why didn't you buy the N800?
