As for the OP, I'd suggest checking for errors in dmesg (you'll need to install xterm).

If dmesg appears clean, try installing wireless tools (sudo gainroot; apt-get install wireless-tools) then run "iwlist wlan0 scanning" and see what is output - you should get a list of available wireless networks. If nothing comes back, or you get an error, it probably is a hardware issue.
without wifi, any apt wouldn't work. however, I did find wireless tools on maemo.org with a source code package which has a full load of .h and .c files. how to install this thing without gcc and compiler available on my 770, and without wifi? thanks for the input tho, anyway if wireless tools in xterm will return a list of available wifi, why the GUI wifi manager wouldn't?

sigh, still can't believe the wifi chip can't survive a 2 hour run tho.
