file size doesn't matter. the file could be 10GB large and played without any problems. ^^

i see it as a kind of screening process - files that don't play on the N900 are usually encoded so badly that it does make sense to reencode them
mhm... i would say that my videos are encoded very well. they even look good on a 42" full-hd with that (actually) low resolution.

but maybe i'm just lucky that most of my vids are encoded well
that's the point

avis play very well on the n900, but the specs state that the n900 should play h264 videos as well. and yeah... equal resolution, bitrate.... all the same... but avis play smooth and h264 doesn't...

ok... the codec does more compressing etc... and therefore the playback needs more power... but i can't understand why my files are lagging... :/
