Watched the presentation last night along with many other videos. I passed on the iPhone. Passed on the Touch. I will purchase this thing. This is a serious non-vaporware paradigm shift. I was particularly interested in how Streetview worked and how iWork "worked". This thing is huge.
Now I readily concede that it needs improvement. I do not like the Get apps from Apple. though I suspect that there will be some sort of Jailbreak to deal with this. The missing camera as I menetioned earlier is most likely a "milk 'em later" move. I expect to see Skype though I'd prefer Gizmo on it.
I did not see any mention of iChat. Which makes sense in that it's not meant to be a heavy text usage machine. But the inability to video chat is a real issue which Apple is going to have to deal with sooner rather than later. if I can supposedly watch video for hours on end, I can surely video chat.
While I found the game demos interesting I'm not really interested in games on the thing.
I also passed on the phone and touch due to DRM. I don't purchase video from the itunes store but I do rent from time to time via my Apple TV (I have Boxee and XMBC on it). Nor will I purchase tv episodes. I'll watch an advert..many adverts before I pay 2 bucks a pop for the shows I like. That ish adds up fast. I don't like not being able to play non Apple M4v files on my mobile devices, but to be honest I don't watch much non-YouTube video on my current mobile device. So really it's not a deal breaker for me.
I also think that there needs to be a means to tether to a phone for internet access a-la N800/810 rather than purchasing another data plan.
That said as a non-hacking computer it is a serious paradigm shift It's not about specs so much as it is about the experience. I like the experience that I saw. I would prefer to interact with my media the way the iPad allows me too. When I need to do my creative/text or mouse intensive stuff I'll go to my laptop which is exactly what is intended.
The number of times I would have preferred the screen size of my laptop when I'm on the couch without the keyboard of the laptop and/or having to find somewhere to perch it, is THE selling point of this device for me. That it also shows up as a USB disk when connected to my laptop/desktop, means I can move stuff to and from it as well (much like my 800).
Yes, this is going to be my first iProduct sale since my 20GB iPod and I will get it before I get a N900 unless my 800 dies and I can't find an 810 for a decent price.
