It's the youtube REST interface that returns an Atom feed.
Unfortunately, not all results have a video link. I think when uploading a video, one can choose whether it's allowed to embed it elsewhere.
The maemo query is one that returns lots of entries without video. Unlike many queries I've asked (mostly googletechtalks and dutch documentary).
Entries with video have the video format in its title.

That said, it can be daunting to do the right thing in all possible situations. Not to mention that the internal playlist handling survives the ever changing UI libraries, and the GUI needs to be re-construction for each Maemo device (no offence b.t.w. being a Qt developer, learned quite some Gtk the last years).

I have no idea, maybe the default mm player has a composed window in front or something else. But indeed, we both use gstreamer and playbin2.
