A lesser manufacturer might actually produce said device knowing that so many people would complain about it.. and wouldn't complain if it was at least the same size as previous models.

Luckily, there are other manufacturers around that listen to their customers and compete with such manufacturers.

Can you uninstall it (free up space) to replace it with something else (better open-source player)? I can see this might be a matter of personal taste, but I'm sure that such a 'computer first' device should clearly be able to do the very things I can do in my Ubuntu distro that Maemo is supposed to be based on and allow you to run as resource efficient as possible with YOUR preference of software.
