Hardware abstraction seems to be a key development area for Nokia and has appeared on recent slides of Maemo/IT OS development so I think Nokia are taking seriously the backward compatability aspect for the future. Whether it's too late for the 770 remains to be seen, but I have hopes that the N800 won't be dropped as quickly when the next device arrives.

As for being stuck with Flash 7 - blame Adobe.
