One of the sources of confusion here is that a bug in Ovi maps makes it stop searching for a lock after 30 seconds or a minute (can't remember which), which isn't enough time to get a cold fix. By running another app like location-test-gui that continously checks the GPS state, you circumvent that problem. Once locked, you can then close the other app and just use Ovi (and i write "use" here in a most optimistic way).
