All the code was in staging. Meaning no android code ever made it into the kernel. They were told to clean up their code; which meant google was the ones who needed to make the changes to their OS. Which were meaningless changes to their code; which wouldnt cause any compatibility problems. Google though just never got their devs to make the changes.

Which is very interesting because it moreso indicates their future intentions. While Maemo 5 and symbian have full embraced open source now.

Regardless; the end result is more work for the google devs and the 3rd party app devs having a fairly difficult porting from android to linux; somewhat.
