622 doesn't have a picture and on my N900 and there it gives an error that it's not a PNG.

Yep. Known bug. Your avatar is in JPEG format. And client expects it to be in png. Fixed in the last internal releases. But not available for the public.

As a workaround I can only recommend to switch to png avatars if it is possible.
