I think it can be done without reducing the space too much ... just basic (customisable) keys with only a slightly smaller area to activate, but smaller icons so you can see behind them a bit.

I am mainly thinking of it for when using with a stylus, with the keyboard closed. There should also be a button that takes you to the full keypad.
