The free analog so far isn't installable via HAM (or .install file), requires a fully custom kernel and in general lacks polish. In time it will improve though.

Quoting the project homepage:

This project was started before Joiku had announced that there will be JoikuSpot for N900 and is continued out of combination of intellectual curiosity and philosophical reasons (the whole free as in freedom vs proprietary software skit)
In fact the custom kernel is not all bad, since once down that road we can get other goodies too like QoS (Quality of Service) routing (enabled in the hotspot kernel but not yet used for anything), though if we can figure out a clean(ish) way to do NAT in userland we'll probably use the stock kernel too (having to reboot after install sucks, and so does reinstalling after firmware upgrade [or worse the custom package somehow messing up the upgrade...])

If someone wants the dirty details please start from page 10. (I guess I should write another summary one of these days...)
