I removed a lots of apps but nothing helped and rootfs did not seem to get any free space. I checked the rootfs usage as follows:

du -xck / |sort -n

and it turned out that apt cache was enormous. I did

sudo gainroot
apt-get clean

and got enough space to upgrade. Everything working as expected
