Ex :

Max Idle Traffic = 512 Bytes
Interval = 5 Minutes

In 5 minutes, if the total traffic of your connection if less than 512*5 = 2.5 KB, it won't be closed.

If you set an interval of let's say 5 minutes and use the connection for a few seconds, the connection will be closed only 10 minutes after and not 5 minutes after. Because the activity of the first 5 minutes is not considered as a idle traffic (you've used it).
