Well, the N900 is a computer more than a phone, so you can just download e.g. Leafpad and edit the files on-phone

Alternately, you can possibly open X Terminal and use it to copy the files to an accessible location and then back again using the cp command. Using UP and DOWN cursor keys on phone recalls terminal history so copying the files (once you've written the commands) should be just UP UP RETURN etc

Is it possible to show only contacts for a service or at least separate contacts by services? I used jabber for the facebook chat but it added 250 guys... Kinda disturbing.
The top menu has a Groups button that lets me see just certain types of contacts but I'm guessing you want to see "All contacts except facebook" ?
Maybe you can use "Voip and IM accounts" control panel to Enable/Disable facebook account.. Or find a way of scripting it?

I installed mplayer. What does it do? It's not in the application menu.
A command line video player. Maybe you need a gui for it like KMPlayer?
