Actually, at the very beginning, I managed to get it working as is, by pressing the button on the Sanyo and quickly inserting the USB plug in the N900 (not easy!) while the blue LED was lit. At least sometimes. This was a tip I found in one of those huge threads I mentioned.

After the big PR1.1 update I could never manage it again, so I went the adapter way, which works every time.
