What about bluetooth gadget in the form of over-the-ear headset with GSM simcard slot. N800 could talk to it over bluetooth and it would be responsible for all the GSM/GPRS/EDGE/whatever traffic. So it's still "one device" with accessory, and there would be no need for tethering any more. Perfect N800 companion! Now that is something I could get excited about.
