Actually I think I only tried it with Nicotine+. Here are the rough instructions (from memory, haven't tried it for some months):

sudo gainroot
apt-get install python-gtk2
exit (leave root shell)
Download nicotine+-1.2.15.tar.gz from http://www.nicotine-plus.org/
tar xzvf nicotine+-1.2.15.tar.gz
cd nicotine+-1.2.15
python nicotine.py
