I do this sort of things from a remote computer with a real keyboard. Install dropbear, a ssh server, and then you can login from your computer and do all sorts of nasty things.

To edit a file you could use vi. Which is not everybody's taste. The easiest editor is probably the one from midnight commander. That's what I use.
