2. When clicking the applet under spotty network conditions, it can freeze the desktop until either connection timeouts or the current status is finally retrieved. I would suggest that retrieving the previous status be implemented on the dialog box, would become optional, and a cancel button would be added for both retrieving previous status and the update process. In my experience completely blocking network access without the option to cancel can have adverse effects when network coverage is partial or spotty. Especially so for such a tightly integrated component of the desktop that can prevent complete usability for a while.
