I don't use sudo gainroot, I just type root. Have tried that?

Also, can't you just ssh in? If so, you'll be root. If you haven't already installed the openssh stuff, I'm wondering if you need a working sudoers to use the Application Manager.

EDIT: Whoops, root just execs sudo gainroot.
