As someone who came from an iPhone I will say that the only thing I like about the n900 is the browser, physical keyboard, and running multiple apps. The n900 doesn't have any apps if that's what you are looking for. A lot of people like to hype up the fact that it runs linux and it's "open" but I was able to customize my jailbroken iPhone way more than tne n900. I could go on for a while but I'm typing this on my phone in bed and my arms are tired lol. The n900 was definitely not worth $500 for me coming from an iPhone.
