No problem - newbies are users, too!

I assume you don't have a GPS device (it's a lot easier if you do - just enable "Auto-Center" and zoom in a lot). You can tap on the map to center on that location. Use the hardware rocker buttons ("Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" on the upper-left of the device) to zoom in an out. You should be able to zoom in to your home location (if you are geographically savvy enough

Oh, and make sure "Auto-Download" is enabled, otherwise you'll have to manually download maps (via the "Manage Maps" dialog).
