I'm still in the early learning stages of maemo and I really don't want to brick my phone, it would be like losing a new family member

I'd love to see this available to 'average' users too, is there anything that can be done to move this along to the extras repo?
You can temporarily enable and disable extras-devel. I do that during development of my own software.

Two things to please remember: 1) developers have software in extras-devel for a reason so be sure to understand those reasons before moving ahead, and 2) extras-devel has no QA so be careful of apps doing things like installing to the OS part of memory (rootfs) eating up space needed for OS upgrades.

Besides my own software which I need to test, I run nothing out of extras-devel*. I'm also waiting patiently for DrNokSnes to be put into extras-testing.

* Ok, not entirely true. For a business presentation I installed BlueMaemo.

EDIT: You mentioned being an inexperienced user. Waiting patiently is not just for new people but also longer time people like me who have owned a 770, n810, and an 900.
