You don't have to free your rootfs unless you fill it up. It's not a bad idea to watch how much rootfs space you have. The most convenient way to do that is to run the healthcheck program (which you have to install first, of course).

There is an article in the wiki (wiki.maemo.org) on freeing up rootfs space.
