I've coded something of a workaround for that. See gvSMS. It downloads your contact lists/groups from Google Voice and sends either via Google Voice or the phone's SMS.

It's python so it could be modified to accept arbitrary CSV lists of groups although I haven't taken it that far yet. Probably my next step will be to allow any Google account (no Google Voice required) to use the phone's SMS sending.

Then ideally, allow you to create groups from your contacts.
