I think many people should lighten up here anyway.

VESA cards were great. Some cards were more standard than others though!

What about the old segmented memory model? 64k code segments, data segments, the stack "growing from top of memory downwards".

Ah the "golden age" when programmers were more intimate with the hardware than their own wives!

When abstration meant giving meaningful names to your memory locations.
