I think this is perhaps a bit of an overstatement. There are some apps, right now, that are fully comparable to iPhone apps. For example, "Angry Birds". There are some very visually impressive community apps coming down the pike, like "stellarium". We'll certainly never have the plethora of slick games that the iPhone has, but the situation is not quite as grim as you are claiming, IMO.
