cpumem-applet is intentionally just the bars in status area, no menu items anywhere. This keeps the applet minimum, and as fast and light as possible.

Catorise just causes install-time lag, but doesn't cause runtime lag. Try "top" command, or more interactive htop app. Conky shows you load averages, disk partition info etc in a graphical manner. Perhaps one of them identifies the offender?

And obviously, reboot once in a while if you haven't done so already.
