I'm assuming you made a typo when you said connect through wifi since you said he didn't have WiFi.
BUT you don't need a USB connection, just connect the laptop using ethernet and make an ad-hoc hotspot, then bridge it with the ethernet connection, many tutorials for this on the internet, just google it.
