Well, the 3GS and N900 has very similar spec. Cortex A8 with 1300-ish mah power source, similar sized screen, wifi and 3g.

s60 can run anything you want in the background IM, VoIP, music, downloads,GPS, streaming thers no limitations its been doing it for years.
iphone os as not changed it freezes states in background and then just pushes the normal notifications in most cases
they think by adding a task dock and a icon that its now multitasking
