I know it's not pretty, but I'm really irritated by all those unhelpful responses I see everywhere this question pops up (and I've really done some research on this matter). That's not what the OP, nor I, wanted. And yes, I want public access. I have a router that shares my internet connection around in my apartment and it works great. But my IP covers the whole town with its Wi-Fi access points, and I just need PPPoE connection to use it. It would be a huge difference to have fast and cheap internet access all around. The thing that hurts the most is that it's just a matter of (relatively simple) software. And it's already working for ages on various GNU/Linux distros. So I'm saddened that it's not available for Maemo. I tried using pppoeconf Debian ARM package, but it won't install.
