@bunanson - You need to install freeProxy on a PC/Laptop that is connected to Internet and let it run as a proxy server for your N900.

I will try to elaborate what Pigro already suggested, based on my testing experience see if this helps.

1) Download FreeProxy from here. Installation is fairly simple.

2) Launch FreeProxy Control Center. Click on the button 'Proxies' to add new proxy.

3) Enter a name for the configuration (eg: N900 Proxy) and leave the protocol as HTTP Proxy (for basic web browsing test).

4) For "Client Port", enter a port number 54545 that is not used by any other program/service. I selected 54545 because it was not in use on my laptop.
In windows you can use the command "netstat -a" to list all the ports in use on your computer.

5) Local binding, from the first drop down, select your network adapter (Wifi or LAN). In the second drop down, select the IP address of your PC/laptop.

6) Save the configuration.

If you are using a Wireless Router, you need to allow Port Forwarding on the router.

7) Login to your router as Admin (Generally http://192.168.0.1)

8) Add a Port Forwarding rule, to forward the port 54545 to your PC/Laptop's IP address.

9) Restart your router.

10) If any Firewall is installed on your PC/laptop, add an exception for the program FreeProxy.exe.

11) Go back to FreeProxy Control Center, Start the proxy (N900 Proxy) in a console mode.

This completes your basic proxy server setup. To test it you first need to know your Internet IP. You can get it from http://whatismyipaddress.com/.

12) In your N900 (or a PC) enter your Internet IP as the proxy server and 54545 as the port. Now if you able to browse web with this proxy, then the FreeProxy setup is working fine.

Once again, this is for basic (HTTP/HTTPS) web browsing. I have not tested with email sync or other apps. You can play around with the settings and see if they click. Let me know how your test goes.
