Doing video decoding on the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) is a good thing since:
It frees up the CPU to do other things (e.g. only 20% CPU is used for full screen video playback).
For signal processing related instructions, the DSP is more power efficient than the CPU. Therefore decoding video on the DSP should increase battery life.
Apart from that, that it is possible for anyone (who has the expertise) to develop code for the DSP of the N900 is cool.. and no other phone has DSP accelerated Theora decoding.
