install rootsh (you've done that)
sudo gainroot (gets you a root shell)

that is all..

it doesn't do any thing else.

sudo other-command

won't work because only a few commands are defined in /etc/sudoers..

From what you've posted, I can't see a problem.. it looks like it is working correctly

you can ONLY use

sudo gainroot
