should i instal debian? what are some applications i can run if i do? and will installing it change the UI of the device?.
Installing debian is not like you think. You won't really install a different OS (you can do that too btw). I guess you heard about the Debian image. When you install debian, you only download an image file of 2GB approx and some tweaks to be able to run it. The image files contains OpenOffice, Iceweasel Web Browser (which is the real desktop firefox), and other apps available to PCs with OSes based on Debian. Maemo5 is based on Debian too, so the transition from PC to mobile wasn't that difficult. You also get some new apps installed that let you modify the keyboard so that apps like OpenOffice can recognize certain characters. Well to sum up, it won't change UI, and install very useful apps. I'd install it if I were you.

they both use a micrSD, but i dont think i can save txts to the card..
There is an app that will let you be able to see old messages..I think it is called something like..ancient sms. However I don't think this applies to a Blackberry. Moving SMSes across different platforms was always difficult. I think the app applies only to Nokia messages. But of course you can move them as txt and be able to read them.
