Just copy to any folder (i would make folder apps) and try to open with app manager from file manager. also it would be much easier if you download them from n900 and not laptop.

to uninstall apps you need to go to app manager and make "uninstall" than select program you want to uninstall. also if you installed without app manager you have to try apt-get (just type it like that and it would give you all commands and descriptions it has) or dpkg (same here)
