My feeling has always been that Canon is the Microsoft equivalent in the DSLR market. They give most people what they want but break compatibility and cut corners where they can get away with it. Nikon's attempts to encrypt the white balance data makes me think of even more draconian control minded companies like Apple. And Pentax, with its use of DNG right out of the camera, and its fully backwards compliant cameras (compatible with lenses going back to the screw mounted era) makes me think of them as the Linux equivalent, at least in spirit.
