I stumbled on this by accident. This is a neat toy! Although it doesn't quite work out-of-the-box for me.

To get rid of the 'error 1' failure message, I had to modify shutter.py to call the irsend command with sudo. This is a fresh install of shutter + lirc, and I even followed the reboots the software suggested.
