My guess would be an unclean umount of [rant]crippled[/rant] FAT32 led to the disaster (almost). But this testdisk is really useful in situations like this!
Did CuteExplorer crash? Did you kill it while still copying/moving some files. Did you connect the USB or did you some trickery in the terminal at that time?
