That said, I know of people who accidentally ran their phones through the washing machine and later got them to work. In cases like that prompt action with a warm hair dryer can do wonders. The longer it sits with any moisture, the less likely it will work properly again.
From my own (non-engineer) experience, the most important factor when dropping electronic devices in water is speedy removal of current (remove the battery ASAP!). Then let the thing dry well (and I mean well, since little drops in confined spaces tend to stay wet a long time). Finally, reassemble, turn on, and prey.

I dropped my n900 while talking a bath like the second day I got it (it dove right to the bottom...). Luckily, no harm was done.
